Rebels Earn Win and a Draw in Home Doubleheader
The Albany Rebels tied Syracuse 2-4 (10) to 2-4 (10) and then defeated Rochester 3-13 (22) to 2-6 (12) in a doubleheader at Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany, N.Y. The matches were Albany's first at home this season.
The first match of the day, between Albany and Syracuse, was a low scoring defensive game. The Rebels held a 3-2 lead about 20 minutes into the game when Rebels midfielder Seamus O'Donnelly was ejected for dissent.
The Rebels responded well and had the better of play the rest of the game despite being down a man. Center back Mark Adam opened the logjam in the second half when he took a long pass from Ryan Moloney, and worked some space for himself inside the box before firing a low shot into the goal.
Joe Bradley added to the lead a few minutes later when he scored a goal, his third of the season.
Syracuse battled back and scored two goals late in the game to tie the score at 9-9. Adam put the Rebels on top once again, with three minutes left when he scored a point from the left side.
With a minute left in the game, Syracuse scored a point on a free from just outside the box following a foul.
"We played very well against Syracuse, especially considering that we were down a man for most of the game," Adam said. "We played great team defense and everyone contributed. It was unfortunate we couldn't hold on for the win."
After a sluggish start in the second game, giving up an early goal to Rochester, the Rebels cruised to a 22-12 win. Cillian Flavin led all scorers with a goal and seven points, Tim Gerrish had a goal and a point and Bradley scored his second goal of the day.
The Rebels hosted Syracuse and Rochester for a postgame party at the Irish Hall on Ontario Street.
